The Secret Sauce Story
𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗩𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗲𝘅 𝗺𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁.
It was 2003, and I had flown out to Salt Lake City to launch our brand at one of the biggest outdoor trade shows in the country.
We didn’t have a booth, we had plywood.
We didn’t have foot traffic, we had tumbleweeds.
We didn’t have hype, we had hope.
Right before I left, I asked my dad the big question:
“So what’s our pitch?”
I expected a slick script. Maybe a magic one-liner.
Instead, he leaned back and said:
• Our products will overdeliver on value.
• Our retailers will actually make money.
• And our customers? We’ll take care of them better than anyone else.
Then he leaned in.
“That’s it. That’s the plan.”
Make it stand out
I felt like he strapped a rocket to my back.
Then I got to the show.
We were tucked into some sad, forgotten corner of a glorified tent. No carpet. Just plywood and dreams.
People wandered past our booth like we were selling cassette tapes at a tech conference.
Not a single dealer placed an order.
Okay, one did…out of pity.
She looked at me, standing alone in that ghost-town of a booth, and said, “I just felt so sorry for you.”
Then she explained she wasn’t actually going to carry anything…just drop-ship!
I was furious.
Embarrassed.
Pissed.
I had walked in expecting to write 300 orders.
I walked out with zero.
Back home, I dropped every competitor’s brochure on my dad’s desk like I was turning in evidence.
“Dad, everyone’s saying what we’re saying. What makes us different?”
Silence.
If silence had been an Olympic sport, my dad would’ve taken the gold in deadpan, arms crossed, sipping coffee, letting the seconds stretch like hours.
Finally, he leaned forward and smirked.
“Because we’re actually gonna do it.”
Then he looked me straight in the eye and said:
“You see Joe, I’ve sold all those brands for years. They all say the right things, but very few deliver. It’ll take time. But one retailer’s gonna give us a shot. And when they do? They’ll never go back.
We’re gonna earn trust the hard way. One relationship at a time.
And when enough people see we’re loyal to them, they’ll become loyal to us.”
That was the moment it all clicked.
We weren’t going to talk our way to the top.
We were going to serve our way there.
Not with noise.
Not with shortcuts.
But with small, consistent acts of CARE that added up to something massive.
The truth is:
You don’t need a booth in the main hall.
You don’t need flashy words or a killer pitch.
You just need to mean what you say…and prove it, every single day.
That’s how you build something people never want to leave.
Not a brand.
Not a business.
A bond.
And bonds?
They don’t just grow.
They compound, and the flywheel begins...
