Paul is one of ours.

There was one guy you never wanted to see walk into the meeting…
Every retailer had one. The resident "expert." The buyer’s secret weapon.

Official title? Who knows.
Unofficial title? Professional Wet Blanket.

Before we ever shook hands, you could almost hear the six-shooter clicking into place.

I'd make the business case for Vortex.

The buyer would nod, lean back in his chair, glance over at Mr. Sunshine and say, "What do you think?"

Here we go...then the shooting started:

"Why should I trust your optics?"
"What makes you think you can compete with the brands we've carried for years?"
“Are these things fully multi-coated?”

Round after round. I'd just sit back, look over at Paul Neess, and smile because I'd brought our secret weapon.

A tall, stoic, calm, seasoned western hunting guide. The louder the room got, the quieter Paul became. He'd let the silence work, smile, and finally say…

"You know...I see things differently." Then he'd quietly go to work.

Years guiding trophy sheep and elk hunts had already answered most of the questions coming across the table. Before long, the Chief Devil's Advocate had holstered his six-shooters…and started taking notes.

By the time we walked out, we'd often have a new dealer.

I must have walked into dozens of meetings with Paul over the years. I never wondered if he'd know the answer. I just wondered how long it would take before the room was on our side. That version of Paul had been thirty years in the making…

My dad hired him into a company of six people tucked into the back corner of a Wild Birds Unlimited store in 1996.

If you've ever worked for a small business, you know the drill. One minute you're helping someone choose binoculars. The next you're carrying fifty-pound bags of bird seed. Then a truckload of bird baths shows up and you spend the rest of the day smelling like damp burlap. Nobody asked whose job it was. You just got after it.

And that’s exactly how Paul helped us build Vortex Optics. Whatever the company needed…
Copywriting…
Product development…
Trade shows…
Winning over skeptical retailers.

As Vortex grew, the jobs Paul had done for years became whole departments. But I don't ever remember a single complaint. Paul never defined himself by the role. He was committed to the mission.

Last week we celebrated milestone anniversaries here at Vortex.
Five…
Ten…
Fifteen years…
Then there was Paul. Thirty.

Thirty years isn't one achievement. It's thousands of ordinary days. Quiet sacrifices. Small decisions. Showing up. Helping wherever you're needed. Every company has a few people whose fingerprints are everywhere.

Paul is one of ours.

Congratulations on thirty years, my friend.
Thank you for helping build the foundation the rest of us have been fortunate enough to stand on.
